Reminder
Whatever your spiritual practice, religion, or craft — emotions will come and emotions will go. “Faith rises and falls like the tides of an invisible ocean,” writes Flannery O’Connor.
You will not always feel energized by rituals or in love with your work, you will not always get that buzz or tingle you first had. Sometimes you will wander in light, and other times in darkness — but the stars are still there even when you can’t see them.
It is ok just to “go through the motions”, to light your candles, recite your prayers, leave water on your altars. It is ok not to feel anything.
An old definition of magic is “an act or assertion of the will” — and the same is true for faith. Keep steadfast and persevere even when you feel nothing; we’re not doing this for an emotional high, but for wholeness.
How much rewarding it is to keep going even when you feel nothing at all.
This is the hard discipline of every spiritual craft.
Remember that the emptiness and the dryness will not last forever.
