Can you knit steel wool into a sweater? I’m uh, asking for a friend.
Habu Textiles used to make a yarn with steel in it, but I’m not sure if they still do. However, I think it was a pretty light weight so a sweater would be quite an undertaking.
Small-Scale Weaving at the Rock House in Charlotte, NC
I often think of looms as big mechanisms which take up lots of space in factories or even in home, but I spotted this little loom for making straps or decorative trims at the Rock House in Charlotte, ND. This house is part of the Charlotte Museum of History site and it dates to 1774 making it the oldest building in the county. It was restored in the mid-20th Century to look as it did when the owners, Hezekiah and Mary Alexander and their ten children, lived there.
While weaving on a large scale is hardly portable, this little loom in a box could easily be cared from room to room and used in between other chores, or while keeping an eye on playing children. Yet another kind of textile work to be done in the home.
The museum also has a kitchen cabin where cooking was done to keep the heat away from the house. The curators believe the cooking was done by women held as slaves by the Alexanders and that the kitchen was also where they lived. In winter that would be warmer, but it sounds awful hot in the summer. There is also a springhouse where water runs right through the building to keep food cool, an early version of a fridge.
