Today and tomorrow (1st and 2nd of November) is Dia de Muertos in Mexico (yeah it’s two days, the main celebration is on the 2nd but on the 1st the souls of children are supposed to come visit this realm, and the next day the grown ups come, so it’s two days), and everyone is welcome to celebrate with us, and take a look at the altars and offerings, or try make a small altar of your beloved ones in your home, even if you do not actively participate in the tradition (like my Jewish friends) you can appreciate it. And of course eat a lot, because that’s how all celebrations go in Mexico.

But.

BUT.

Here’s a little rant:

I you wanna say it in Spanish (instead of Day of the Dead) please PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD say Día de Muertos NOT Día de los Muertos. That second phrase is the literal translation of the English expression (day of THE dead), and it’s badly done. Please do not add that “LOS” when you say it.

When I hear somebody say or write “día de los muertos” I know right away that they are not a native speaker and if they are, they did not grew up/leart their Spanish language in Mexico.

End of the rant.

I’m Spanish and I would say Día de los Muertos, lmao. In Spain we wouldn’t consider the phrase grammatically correct saying it without the “los”, so it sounds wrong for us. I’ve always heard “Día de *los* Muertos”

LOL I know, right? It’s weird.

I mean, it is not grammatically correct, but if you come to Mexico one day, you’ll find an hilarious amount of crazy stuff we say and that makes sense so us but it makes no sense AT ALL to other Spanish speakers XD

I in all my years of life have never heard people say Dia de LOS Muertos, we even have a joke that it is a single word, because of the way we say it (like diademuertos, or quinceaños, or carneasada).

ALSO: If you wanna take a look at the craziness of Mexican Spanish you can go here and here (the word “ahorita” drives a lot of people crazy LOL).

I saw something similar on Etsy recently and thought it was super cute. I also thought it would be a super easy diy. I made this in less than 15 fifteen minutes with felt squares. I’m super pleased with how it came out and I love getting to see my little enamel pin collection all the time.
