Last night was a rare starry one here in northwest Sutherland….so I nipped out of the cottage around 11pm to see if I could snap the Milky Way. It’s there as the lighter patch in the middle of the pic, above the right hand chimney. The glow on the horizon is from a lighthouse over on the Isle of Lewis.
We’re all finally back here in Minnesota working at our home base today, but we’re all still daydreaming about our travels. Today we’re missing the heck outta’ Norway! Exploring the beautiful Norwegian countryside and learning hand-in-hand with tons of incredible people was a huge highlight of our 2018 year.
The residency program in Iceland with Light Grey Art Lab was for me a week of inspiration, peace, meditation and reopening my senses to the energy of nature. I didn’t know what to expect but I returned home transformed in so many positive ways. I arrived in Iceland after a period in my life when I had very little opportunity and time for my art and I was struggling to find my way back to my own creativity and passion.
This cake is an Icelandic dessert called Hvít súkkulađiskyrterta, a recipe by Nanna Rögnvaldardóttir, whose book I found in a nice café and book shop where we had a wonderful hot chocolate with my fellow artists. I remember taking this book into my hand and put it back to the shelf, then take it again. When I saw the photo of this cake I could sense that kind of excitement and enthusiasm that always precedes a creation or testing of a new recipe. Finally Ellen my dear photographer friend convinced me to buy this book so I could virtually take the taste of Iceland with me back home. Baking this cake in Hungary and put together little memories from our trip brought me back to this wonderful one week and I am grateful to live those moments of peace and finding my way back to the source of my creative energies.
