“When I was growing up, my parents spoke to each other in Spanish, but they didn’t speak to us in Spanish because they were told not to. In school we weren’t allowed to speak it.”
and also???
“… But America is the only country that promotes monolingualism. Here it’s English, English, English. Every other country makes their children learn a second language very early on. So as my political and social activism grew, I was like, ‘I really need to learn Spanish.’ So I did.“
idk how many people i’ve known growing up in texas whose parents speak fluent spanish but they don’t speak a lick solely because their parents were afraid or told not to teach their children. it’s unspeakably common and doesn’t in any way shape or form diminish someone’s claim to or pride in their heritage.
fuck that guy. you go eva.
lack of intergenerational language exchange is one of the leading causes of language death for endangered and indigenous languages because of this culture of shame attached to “lesser” coded languages so frankly if yr mocking people for not speaking their mother tongue without taking the colonial reasons for this into account, you’re an ignorant prick and you can go fuck yourself like
Te Reo Maori (the mother tongue of New Zealand) was almost exterminated in the 1950′s-60′s because white people tried to eradicate it. Only a very small and very determined group of Maori activists were able to keep it alive.
This was so recent my dad remembered it happening.
Now the language is mandatory to learn at Primary School level. Language extermination is awful and a lot of countries suffer/have suffered from it.
Donate if you can, and even if you can’t, spend some time this November educating yourself about the history of the very-much-still-alive tribe that sat down with the pilgrims, the continued history of colonization in America, and about the tribe/s whose land you are occupying.
Okay so there’s a lot of panicking on my dash and through some searching here’s what’s going on (as far as I can tell):
1.
The tumblr app has been removed from the apple app store (some reports
say it’s been removed on the android side of things too, but others
say it hasn’t)
2. This is because of too much “inappropriate content”, largely due to the massive amount of porn bots
3.
Tumblr has released a shoddily put together bot in the hopes of
eliminating them. Many legitimate blogs (particularly those who post those
aforementioned “inappropriate” things) have been terminated in the
process, but multiple people have reported that emailing the staff will
get your blog back, though it is a pain in the ass
There’s nothing
out there to suggest tumblr is shutting down. You most likely do not
need to fear for your blog unless it is a porn blog (or possibly a gore
blog) and even if you do get deactivated, emailing the staff should
return your blog to you. There’s really no need to panic
If
you’re still worried, you can always exchange contact info/alternate
social media with people. If you want to keep track of me specifically, I am also on twitter under the same username or there is always AO3 (if I do disappear off the face of the blue hellscape without warning, leave a comment on any fic of mine saying you want to get in touch and we will make it work)
TL;DR: deep breaths people, it’s nothing to panic about
You know, when I was in the Guides (you’re called Girl Scouts in America, right?) there were always people muttering about how it was regressive and anti-feminist and whatever, making us do girly things all the time, and I kind of internalised that. It wasn’t until I left for university that I realised exactly how damn much it had taught me.
I knew how to cook. I knew how to light a fire, do basic first aid, swim, iron, do the laundry, wash-up oil-soaked frying pans at lightning speed, make a bed, change a fuse, hell, even build a bridge in an emergency. I found out the other day that one of my friends didn’t know what you were supposed to do when you burn yourself. On my first day at university, I met somebody who didn’t know how to to do the washing up.
People had such a weird view on it when we were kids. They weren’t teaching us to be housewives. They weren’t teaching us how to look after other people, not really. They were teaching us how to take care of ourselves. I kind of wish I could go back and apologise for sulking so much about being made to learn the symbols on laundry labels.
And if they taught me to paint my nails stylishly and flower-arrange like a duchess too, well, you can bet I have the best looking dorm room on campus.
People are so quick to shit on traditionally feminine activities… without realizing that basically forever, women have been the backbone of society. Laundry, cooking, childcare, etc are important and are honorable and respectable jobs/tasks, so long as they aren’t imposed on anyone because of gender.
Everyone should know how to do laundry, cook for themselves, and do all the things listed above. If a man (or anyone for that matter_ felt he was above those things because they would make him less respectable, I’d actually lose respect for him.
Oh my sapling, we all fear taking the first step forward. It’s always so frightful to meet new people for it involves being vulnerable and being judged by others. My sweet thing, please know that all people experience this, this fear, of reaching out and beginning new relaitions. You are not alone in this.
Hold onto that knowledge, and reach out: I promise you will be met half way.
It’s the Seventh Sphere Tarot ! It’s perhaps my kindest deck and is always urging me to look out for myself. It’s not based on Rider Waite, but instead the Tarot de Marseille.
