Although the Rider Waite Smith tarot deck was meant to showcase universal archetypes to spark the subconscious mind of every man and woman regardless of race – and although Colman-Smith was a bi-racial woman of color who spent her early life living in Jamaica, she was paid to draw scenes depicting only whites.
Representation matters. Visual reparations matter. As new generations of melanated men and women turn toward tarot cards for guidance, spirituality and entrepreneurship, its imperative they use tools that replenish their self-esteem, power & potential.
The Melanated Classic Tarot deck is scheduled for release on January 21st 2019. It includes 78 full color illustrations by Julia Goolsby; the instruction booklet, written by Oubria Tronshaw, includes a revolutionary narrative of divine love and partnership. Hey guys! This deck had been quite an intense project, now almost 4 years in the making. The Kickstarter is coming together slowly but surly, and right now we’re mostly waiting in the video and then for Kickstarter to approve the project! Launch is imminent- be unfortunately not today, and I had hoped and planed. But that’s just another lesson the tarot can teach us: the best laid plans often go astray!
