Some good news, I’ve been talking to two developers now and got them working together, we just had a meeting with the guys behind an existing large (millions of users) site similar to Tumblr, with a vibrant and open-minded community, and more importantly, it has open-minded owners who believe in free speech. They think we can get something done here to rescue the whole community.
I’m not allowed to reveal the site name yet. I can tell you it’s mainstream, open to everyone, open-minded and welcoming. (It’s not WordPress or any site owned by Facebook or Twitter. It’s not Pillowfort, that’s in closed beta. It’s not Ello, that’s mainly for artists. It’s not kinkspace or fetlife, those are too specialist. It’s not jux, that seems to be closed. It’s not Soup, that seems still in development and too small.)
One of the reasons for delaying the announcement for next few days is they don’t want a “land grab” where people take the names of current popular Tumblr users over there (cyber squatting). So they are looking at ways for existing Tumblr users to keep the same names on the new site.
More info over the days to come.
The plan is, broadly:
1. By December 9th, announcement of the new site and how to secure your username there
2. By December 10th, an online tool for bloggers to copy their existing content to the new site automatically, with the same tags and captions.
3. Bloggers will need to copy their content across between December 10th and December 17th if they want to use the automatic tool.
4. My understanding is that after December 17th there will be no public access to any “flagged” posts on Tumblr, but the original poster will still be able to see the flagged post (for a short time at least). Therefore, the original poster may still be able to manually download a post to their own PC or phone, after December 17th, and manually upload it to the other site. But if you have lots of posts that will take a long time, it will be better to use the automatic tool before December 17th.
Please understand that these dates are approximate and may change for technical or other reasons.
There may be a few rough edges or not so perfect looking site design on the transfer tool. Everyone is doing their best. The main goal here is to help as many people as possible preserve access to their content, in the short space of time Tumblr has allowed us, and preserve as much as possible of the Tumblr community spirit somewhere new.
The new site will cater for photo, GIF, text and html posts. It will not offer video and audio posts, due to cost reasons – maybe in future, but for now you will need to preserve video and audio content yourself in some other place.
If your Tumblr blog has a mixture of original content and reblogs, or all reblogs, all of that can be copied over to the new site. Reblogs will become “your” original content if nobody else posted them yet, otherwise they will be shown as reblogs. The devs are looking at ways to preserve attribution of reblogs back to the original Tumblr poster, if that person also moves to the new site.
Important: your Likes cannot be copied from Tumblr to the new site. You will have to go find the same posts again on the new site, and like them afresh.
(Similarly, existing reblog comments, asks, messages and other user interaction on Tumblr cannot be copied to the new site – that’s just too much to do, in the short time available.)
If you want to preserve any of your existing Liked posts on Tumblr, you will need to either: (1) download the post to your own PC, or: (2A) reblog it now to your own Tumblr blog, and then (2B) use the automatic tool, before December 17th, to move your whole Tumblr blog across to the new site.
If you have Liked a lot of posts here on Tumblr, the gridllr.com webapp should be able to help you do steps 1 and 2A quickly, I mean download or reblog.
(Someone complained to me today about the appearance of Gridllr on a phone. It’s best to use Gridllr on a PC, Mac or Tablet with a large screen.)
If you have liked a post here on Tumblr and the original poster decides to delete it, or even to delete their entire blog, some time before December 17th, then that post will be permanently lost. So if you want to be sure to preserve any of your Liked posts, you should best download or reblog as soon as possible. If it’s reblogged to your own blog it is safe from deletion, at least for next few days.
Obviously, you will lose access, after December 17th, to all past posts you have liked, if Tumblr has flagged them as NSFW. Again, the steps (1), or (2A) and (2B) covered above will be the only way to hold on to these posts.
Everybody’s talking about Tumblr’s probable eventual demise! So I thought I’d just remind you all that I can be found on a couple of different platforms:
I’m also on Dreamwidth in a more private/personal way as chocolatepot. My DW entries are mainly friends-locked, out of habit but also because I talk about my job and/or job search from time to time. Dreamwidth has a bad rep as a dead zone, but that’s a) kind of a self-perpetuating perception, since if people didn’t think “nothing goes on there” they’d take more time to read and comment, and b) not even that true, I read my friends-list every morning and there’s always new stuff. I’m going to quote from the recent post from the admin there:
With the new update to Tumblr’s community guidelines announcing that they will no longer permit adult content on their site, we’d like to take a moment to reassure all y’all that we have your backs. With a very few exceptions (such as spam and the like), if it’s legal under US law, it’s okay to post here. We’re 100% user-supported, with no advertisers and no venture capitalists to please, and that means we’re here for you, not for shady conglomerates that buy up your data and use it in nefarious ways.
Tumblr’s definition of “adult content” seems to be inherently visual, and I also wanted to remind people that we do have basic image hosting. (It’s definitely not as slick and easy to use as Tumblr’s, I won’t lie, but it does exist.) If you want to include images in your posts, you can upload them and the site will give you HTML that you can paste into your entry. Or, if you have post-by-email set up, just attach the image to the end of your email and it’ll be posted. All users have a 500MB image hosting quota right now. I know that’s small for people looking for a place to host NSFW image blogs, but we are reviewing usage statistics to see if we can increase it, or at least make it possible for people to pay for more quota like you can for more icons.
For those asking whether we have a mobile app: we don’t at the moment! There are many (soooooo many) prerequisites that we have to do first, which we’ve been working on but haven’t yet finished, because we’re dealing with a lot of systems and architecture decisions that were made nearly 20 years ago by now. (A mobile app would also be subject to the same censorship pressure Tumblr faced – it’s looking pretty good that Apple taking the Tumblr app out of the App Store was the proximate cause of Tumblr’s content guidelines change, and Apple is notoriously strict on apps for sites that allow user-generated content – so even once we have one, it’s even odds on how long it’ll be able to stay available for certain platforms.) We’ve been trying to improve the website’s experience on small screens in the meantime, and that’s an ongoing project that we’ll do our best to devote some more attention to over the next few months.
Feel free to use the comments to this post to recommend communities to join and to make new friends, whether you’re here for the first time as a Tumblr refugee or have been here since the start (and any range in between). To the newcomers: we’re happy to have you join us. Welcome aboard!
Fandom is a very different place on text-based and journal/community-based sites, but still fun! There’s a multifandom friending meme going on, too, to help you find people to follow there.
This is basically my only platform for witchcraft, this blog shouldn’t get flagged and I don’t have any explicit sexual stuff on my main, but I do draw nude/sensual figures a lot so I have no clue if that’ll stay in tact.
I’m probably gonna be scooting to twitter and/or instagram (I don’t have accounts yet, will notify when I do), but as they don’t have any decent way to compartmentalize their stuff it’d likely be fandom/art only unless I make multiple accounts which I don’t have the brainpower for. We’ll see how that goes.
In the meantime, I do have a deviantart (ratopiangirl) which is ancient and not up to date but I do check it regularly for messages and stuff. So I can be contacted through there for now if everything suddenly disappears.
I love using herbal offerings in my daily practice, but once the ritual is complete, I can’t just return the herbs to the earth right then and there because I live in an apartment. So I keep this pot on my porch with a bit of dirt in it to temporarily hold the herbs until each month’s full moon. I plan a hike around the full moon and bring my collected herbs with me to bury somewhere on the trail. This is one of my favorite rituals to feel connected with the earth and my deities, not to mention a great alternative to disposable spell jars!✨🌿
i am SO SICK of unhappy endings. idk about anyone else but the #1 reason i like fiction is because everything can always work out no matter how bad it is. “what if the good guys lost” shut up. you are so fucking boring. give me happy endings or give me nothing
One part coconut oil to two parts beeswax Optional: add a few drops of avocado oil to make a softer balm
Lemon balm essential oil / dried or fresh lemon balm
Peppermint essential oil / dried or fresh peppermint
Optional: vitamin E or tea tree oil for softer lips
Tools:
A tin or old, empty lip balm container
Spoon or skewer /something to stir with
Glass bowl
Optional: pot with water, fine mesh strainer
METHOD 1: Using essential oils
Mix your one part coconut oil to two parts beeswax into your glass bowl; now would also be the time to add your avocado oil and vitamin E
Put the bowl into the microwave for 30 second intervals, stirring between each, until fully melted. Alternatively: put the bowl over a pot of water to create a double boiler and melt the contents of the bowl
Once everything is melted and combined add your essential oils, remember to only use a few drops! Using too much of an essential oil may result in chemical burns!
Finally pour your mixture into your empty container and leave on your counter or in your freezer to set and ready to use!
METHOD 2: using herbs
You will want to infuse your coconut oil with the herbs; to do this measure out your coconut and optional avocado oils into your bowl and add in your dried/fresh herbs. Use double the amount of dried herbs than you would fresh!
Next place the bowl over your double boiler or in the microwave and melt the oil(see method one)
Once the coconut oil is melted and the herbs have steeped take your fine mesh strainer and remove the herb debris
Now that you have your infused oil repeat step 2 with your added beeswax until melted and combine
Finally pour your mixture into your empty container and let it set in your freezer or on your counter to be ready to use in an hour or two!
METHOD 3: for low spoons
If you can’t go to the trouble of making your own lip balm you can always cleanse an existing lip balm and seal it with a sigil of “confident and clear speech” or any variation of the phrase
