The shoulder strap? It is part of the original pattern (Simplicity 8162).
If you’re working with the new American Duchess patterns (Simplicity 8579), the stays do not have an actual strap piece (they have a “strap” made with twill tape).
But, you can draw the strap if you prefer to add one! You might need help because the best is to draw it while you’re wearing the stays or mock up stays.
My next project…. beginning stages…. the inner bodice is cut out and I am beginning to sew. I have a large amount of the plaid fabric left from the last project and I love it, so I am putting it good use for this. The materials listed as historically correct are light weight wool, worsted, or silk. I’ve seen a couple extant examples in plaid, but since there seems to be a deficit in the number of extants in this dress style, I wouldn’t let the lack of those examples prevent me from making mine in plaid.
Dedicated to all the well-meaning, ill-informed strangers who see me stitching in the wild
this is one of the most meta things that I have ever seen. the layers and experiences needed to understand this are absolutely hilarious. this is amazing and I love it. ❤
Yes hello i need this. Is there a pattern i can has?
There absolutely is a pattern. You can grab it here
Second lot of photos from Copenhagen, actually from our first day. I wore my newly sewn dress I finished two days before the trip, a dress based on a 1940s sewing pattern. I wore it all the way from home, on the plane, and basically the whole day wandering through Copenhagen. It’s very exciting to properly road test my new dress and I am happy to report that it survives my trip! I’m so chuffed it fits perfectly despite many stupid mistakes and my inability to deal with zippers. I’ve hoarded the fabric, this vintage bedsheet, for years so I’m happy that I waited for the perfect design. To think that I almost turned it to a 1950s sundress!!
