Lots of people ask me about the source of this, the Most Popular Thing I Have Ever Put on Tumblr, so here’s the deal: last year I was an Artist-at-Sea working aboard R/V Falkor, an oceanographic research vessel with a robust outreach program. We spent three weeks crossing the Pacific Ocean, during which time I drew a brief comic about the science team and their aims during the cruise. You can read it here.
Applications for the next batch of Artists-at-Sea are currently OPEN, so if you wanna spend several weeks in the ocean learning about science and making art, go apply.
Erik’s first overnight trip! And my first one on Comet.
The ride there was freezing cold and bumpy, and on the way back the sun tried so hard to come through for us! But just ended up dumping on us some more. Our summers are weird here….
Starting off on this trip, I wasn’t sure whether it would be too windy outside to get to Millcove. The wind was much fresher in the inner harbour, and i shook out two reefs as i progressed. The sea, as often in a south easterly, was fairly sloppy. However, beating with the tide got me to my destination, all be it with the occasional dousing of spray.
It was so hot that day that I went for a swim. A first for me, but if this weather keeps up it won’t be the last! Oh and as you may have already guessed, my camera is waterproof.
